Earth, water , fire, air, ether, mind, reason and also ego; these constitute my nature divided into eight parts. This indeed is my lower (material nature); the other that this, by which the whole universe is sustained , know it to me my higher  nature in the form  of Jiva, O Arjuna.

Meanings:

 

shriibhagavaanuvaacha = the Supreme Lord said
mayi = to Me
aasaktamanaaH = mind attached
paartha = Arjuna
yogaM = self-realization
yuJNjan.h = practicing
madaashrayaH = in consciousness of Me
asa.nshayaM = without doubt
samagraM = completely
maaM = Me
yathaa = how
GYaasyasi = you can know
tat.h = that
shR^iNu = try to hear.

 

 Sri Bhagwan said: Arjuna, now listen how with the mind attached to Me through exclusive love and practising Yoga with absolute dependence on Me,you will know Me, the repository of all power, strength, and glory and other attributes, the universal soul, in entirety and without shadow of doubt.||1||

 

Meanings:

 

GYaanaM = phenomenal knowledge
te = unto you
ahaM = I
sa = with
viGYaanaM = numinous knowledge
idaM = this
vakshyaami = shall explain
asheshhataH = in full
yat.h = which
GYaatvaa = knowing
na = not
iha = in this world
bhuuyaH = further
anyat.h = anything more
GYaatavyaM = knowable
avashishhyate = remains.

I shall unfold to you in its entirety this wisdom along with knowledge of qualified aspect of God, having known which nothing else remains yet to be known in this world ||2||

SYNONYMS

yoginam–of all yogis; api–also; sarvesam–all types of; mat-gatena–abiding in Me; antah-atmana–always thinking of Me within; sraddha-van–in full faith; bhajate–renders transcendental loving service; yah–one who; mam–Me (the Supreme Lord); sah–he; me–Mine; yukta-tamah–the greatest yogi; matah–is considered.

TRANSLATION

And of all yogis, he who always abides in Me with great faith, worshiping Me in transcendental loving service, is most intimately united with Me in yoga and is the highest of all.

SYNONYMS

tapasvibhyah–than the ascetic; adhikah–greater; yogi–the yogi; jnanibhyah–than the wise; api–also; matah–considered; adhikah–greater than; karmibhyah–than the fruitive worker; ca–also; adhikah–greater than; yogi–the yogi; tasmat–therefore; yogi–a transcendentalist; bhava–just become; arjuna–O Arjuna.

TRANSLATION

A yogi is greater than the ascetic, greater than the empiricist and greater than the fruitive worker. Therefore, O Arjuna, in all circumstances, be a yogi.
