Desires

Bhagwad Gita, Desires No Comments »

Desire, the feeling that accompanies an unsatisfied state, an inclination to want things, can Never Be Fulfilled. Bad (Life-endangering) desires can be destroyed only by promoting good (life-enriching) desires.

Krushn said:  Born of the activating attribute of Nature (rajo-guna), it is desire, it is anger, (that is the impelling force)—full of unappeasable craving and great evil: know this (two-sided passion) to be the foulest enemy here on earth. Gita 3.37
As fire is enveloped by smoke, as a mirror by dust, as an embryo by the womb, so this (wisdom) is enveloped by that (desire). Gita 3.38

O Son of Kunti (Arjuna)! the constant enemy of wise men is the unslakable flame of desire, by which wisdom is concealed. Gita 3.39

The senses, mind, and intellect are said to be desire’s formidable stronghold; through these, desire deludes the embodied soul by eclipsing its wisdom. Therefore, O Best of the Bharata Dynasty (Arjuna)! first discipline the senses, then destroy desire, the sinful annihilator of wisdom and Self-realization.

Gita 3.40-41

Three types of desires described in Gita

Peaceful (satvic) – desire dominated by satva guna is like fire being choked with smoke. A slight breeze is enough to remove the smoke and bring out the flame in all its glory.
Restless (rajasic) – desire gushes out from a restless and selfish urge to acquire, possess and enjoy the sense-objects. This desire demands strenuous attempts for its removal.
Low (tamasic) – To remove the foetus in the womb, not only is effort required, but efflux of time as well. Time and self-preparations are necessary to eliminate the deep-rooted tamasic desire.

They who, having taken refuge in Me, strive for deliverance from old age and death know Brahma(The absolute), the whole embodied souls, and the entire field of Karma(action) as well as My Integral being, comprising the field of matter, Brahma and the unmanifest Divinity dwelling in the heart of all beings as their witness. And they who, possessed of a steadfast mind, know thus even at the hour of death, they too know Me alone.

But those men of virtuous deeds, whose sins have come to an end, being freed from delusion in the shape of pairs of opposites born of attraction and repulsion, worship Me with a firm resolve in every way.

[Shlok 27, Adhyay 7]

O valiant Arjuna, through delusion in the shape of pairs of opposites (such as pleasure and pain) born of desire and aversion, all living creatures in this world are falling a prey to infatuation.

Welcome Back

Is this the time to go back? Most of us will answer it as not really if they dont know the content. But, we would suggest that this is the right time to go back. Yes, after leaving a rote and contingent life for more than two decades i thought of going back. It is known that such reverberating adventures are not always favorable but at the same time meaningless enliven life will lead us to academic Alzheimers disease. I dont say that nobody knows every answer of the questions that they come across in their life. But it takes time to find them ranging from seconds to centuries. At the same time, wewant a key that opens almost every locks and that search ends in our ancient literature. And, while mentioning mentoring ancient literature we mostly end up around universal mentor “Srimad Bhagwad Gita”.

Besides me, I found two young imprudently wise pundits who shares the same idea and will keep creatively stubborn like me alive. This blog is collaboration of our work and also an enduring commitment to our culture. Filtration of our souls until it gets immortal would be the highest compensation we can expect with it. This is probably the homework which is undone since birth and we hope to finish before getting involved in its revolving interest rate.
